Armenia has decided to appoint a defense attaché to its mission to the European Union, according to a government announcement made Thursday.

The draft decision, presented by the Defense Ministry, says the appointment is necessary due to significant recent developments in defense, security, and military cooperation between Armenia and the EU.

The decision states that the defense attaché of Armenia to the EU is planned to be appointed and accredited concurrently as the defense attaché to NATO and Belgium.

It is envisioned that the attaché will be working within the country’s EU mission, claiming a seat at the table during important discussions where they will be able highlight Armenia’s military priorities and security concerns. The country’s Defense Ministry expects that this move will help it work more effectively with EU partners and build stronger relationships that could lead to expanded military cooperation in the future. So far it is unknown who will take on this role.

This announcement comes just days after the EU revealed it’s considering a new non-lethal defense package for Armenia. This would be the second such support package, following an initial one approved back in July.
