Semyonovka, a village founded in Armenia’s eastern Gegharkunik region in the mid-19th century, is a place steeped in history and culture. Perched atop the Dilijan mountain pass, just a few kilometers from the shimmering waters of Lake Sevan, the village sits at an impressive elevation of 2,114 meters above sea level. This picturesque location, with its breathtaking views and serene environment, was once home to a thriving community of Molokans, a religious minority who fled persecution in Russia.

The Molokans established Semyonovka as a sanctuary where they could practice their faith freely, but left en masse after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Some relocated to Yerevan, while others moved to Fioletovo —a larger Molokan village in Armenia’s northern Lori province — or went to Russia.

Today, some 300 Armenians call Semyonovka home. The village’s landscape is dotted with dilapidated, but still beautiful, Molokan houses, standing as silent witnesses to a bygone era. These structures, with their unique architectural features, serve as poignant reminders of the village’s rich cultural heritage and the traditions that once flourished in the area.

In recent years, Semyonovka has become a popular destination for visitors seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. The village offers a range of activities, from horseback riding on its scenic trails to stargazing under its clear, unpolluted skies. Many people also come to Semyonovka to escape the sweltering heat of Yerevan, finding solace in its cool, refreshing climate.

With its historical significance, natural beauty, and promises of adventure, Semyonovka continues to captivate everyone who visits.
