Anatol Lieven, Sheila Fitzpatrick, Svetlana Savranskaya, and Thomas Graham held a roundtable discussion titled “Collapse of the Soviet Union” at a symposium on Russia organized by the Monterey Initiative in Russian Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. The discussion took place on July 7, 2024, in Tbilisi and was moderated by distinguished historian Ronald Grigor Suny.
Anatol Lieven is an author, journalist, and policy analyst. He is a visiting professor at King’s College London and a senior fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.
Sheila Fitzpatrick is an Australian historian renowned for her expertise on Soviet and modern Russian history, particularly during Joseph Stalin’s rule.
Svetlana Savranskaya is the director of Russia programs at the National Security Archives in the United States.
Thomas Graham was special assistant to the U.S. president on Russia from 2004 to 2007. He is a distinguished fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations
This year’s Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia took place in Yerevan, Tbilisi, and Istanbul from July 1 to July 20.
